It’s my personal belief that you don’t have to buy leads to get results and that there are some alternatives that won’t break the bank (most lead generation strategies I teach my clients and team mates are actually free).
To be honest, I did buy leads in the past and from my experience and from the view point of others I’ve spoken to on this subject, it’s hard to find a reputable lead provider who gives you the leads that you think you’ll get. The biggest problem with buying leads is that you don’t know from where these leads actually came from, how old they are and their level of interest. In some cases, you could even be buying leads that entered their information in a prize draw to win a free iPhone! Yes I’ve genuinely heard of someone who went out to buy leads for a home based business and this is what one of the leads he called said to him.
Having said all of the above, I do believe that actually buying a few hundred leads is good for practicing on the phone. To contrast this however, you could just as easily pull out the Yellow Pages (which still exists at the time of writing!) and call local business owners to ask if they are open to a side project that wouldn’t interfere with their career.
So overall, unless you really want to get some decent experience with dealing with potentially tough prospects on the phone, I recommend generating your own leads (see this blog post for 7 strategies you can do TODAY to get leads) so you can be certain of the source of the leads.
The other big advantage of doing this verses having to go and buy leads for a home based business is that you can build a relationship a lot easier, allowing your closing ration to be higher. Keep in mind that people only buy from people they know, like and trust in network marketing.
