So there I was, out on the high street. It was a warm, hot and sticky summer’s day at approx 11am on a Saturday in July and while everyone else is out having fun in the amazing weather, I’m walking into businesses uninvited without an appointment to either pitch my product or leave flyers. I’m starting to feel a bit like a stalker while I walk around the various different shops I’m about to prospect and wait until they die down a bit.
What also didn’t help in the hot weather was that I was sweating twice as much, firstly because it’s hot and also because I was SO NERVOUS to even open the damn door let alone open my mouth and breath a word, with my heart beating out of my chest. The fear of rejection was very apparent and real. I’m sure you’ve been there too right? As soon as I walked in the shops at times I was given ‘that look’ as if to say, go back to wherever you came from…
I was also wearing my network marketing company’s shirt which wasn’t too uncomfortable to wear but made me feel like a sleazy sales rep, y’know the ones who walk up to you in the street and hold onto your ankles while you walk away ’till you donate (and you scream “didn’t I already tell you I’ve given to charity in the past?”). I probably looked that way too in hindsight.
When I wasn’t trying to make awkward conversation whilst buying stuff I didn’t remotely need or even want just so I could prospect someone, I was retreating by leaving brochures for my health & wellness business either in changing rooms in department stores or on the bus on the way home which I DESPERATELY wanted to get on and not prospect another living soul again.
I had no fun going out there and pitching total strangers on my business. I had been doing this for almost a year and I barely even made enough to cover my autoship. I wanted to make this work and really loved the company I was in, but I just wanted to promote my opportunity in a different way that was more comfortable for me. Maybe you and I are on the same page.
Living the dream, right? Actually, I was near enough DONE. I hated every second of the ‘old school method’, the one that everyone says has worked for decades. That may be true, but these strategies are outdated and do not align with recent changes in society. For example it’s a lot harder to sell stuff nowadays to cold prospects, people are buyer and scam beware before you even talk to them.
Quick question or two:
Sick of explaining everything to people, answering questions until you’re blue in the face and nobody still signs up?
How would you like to answer less questions and recruit MORE reps?
Read on and I’ll explain exactly how to do that plus more in this exciting blog post I’ve put together for you 🙂
So to echo the example I gave earlier, if someone knocks on your door with the sole purpose to sell you something and you have NO CLUE who they are, how likely are you to buy from them? People are convinced that their product sells itself which is just not true. If that was the case, why would they even need distributors like you at all?
What I do is very different to most home business owners who usually make a lot of blunders early on like I did…I don’t sell products or even the business opportunity. I provide value to the marketplace, and my target market i.e. my marketplace is people who already but what I sell (or have purchased it in the past). I don’t focus on people who have never bought what I’ve sold before as I have no idea if that person is even going to buy ever.
1 – In order to change your results, you must first change your target market. Who is it you’re looking to attract? You shouldn’t be looking for everyone as your target market. When you target your message for everyone, you really end up targeting nobody because your advertising is way too broad. When you get the right message in front of the right people you WILL make heads turn.
I bet when you were first looking for a partner in your life you had a very specific set of characteristics they should have, and not have, in order for them to qualify to be with you. It’s the exact same when you run your business. Without being super specific on who you want to attract you’re running your business into the water.
Think about when you’re selling a house – would you rather sell to:
A) An experienced and regular buyer of properties and has money allocated to invest into the market
B) Someone who has never bought a house in their life
Now I’ve never sold a house before and it may not be the best example here, but I’d rather sell to people who are familiar with already buying something similar that I offer. You’ll get way less objections and questions. In fact you’ll never get rejected again! Why? Because someone else did all of that plus the convincing, explaining etc. in the past. That’s why I cringe into a ball whenever I see people on their social media profiles trying to justify and explain to people why their business isn’t a scam or fly-by-night.
What’s worse is that the friends and family model lasts for about 3 to 4 weeks until everyone tells them to go fly a kite. Then what? A lot of people’s warm market are just not business minded. Would they be open to your products? They might be, but you really should position your business that makes them think you don’t care if they join you or not (and that should be the case anyway). You still want to retain relationships with your friends and family as no network marketing business is worth more than them. The solution is looking online for ways to promote your business without looking like a creeper.
2 – What the majority of people don’t know is that we’re not in the home business or product selling business but we are in the PEOPLE business. So in order to become successful in your network marketing business you need to become good with people, not just that but find out what people are really looking for and painting a picture in your prospect’s mind that they really need your product to solve a problem they have.
Note that different people have different wants and needs. It may not just be money they are looking to make, but instead create time freedom. They could be a high level corporate executive (a good target market by the way as you know they are likely to have a serious budget for a business) but are strapped for time.
Therefore you will need to position your offer in a different way if that’s the case. You will need to instead of stop pitching benefits and features, focus on THEM and what they are most interested in. Nobody cares what YOU liked about the comp plan, but what did they like about what they saw? Ask them and all shall be revealed.
3 – Making money in your business has nothing to do with your company or your products. The products just have to provide value to the marketplace. People don’t care if they are selling mouse traps, T-shirts, baseball caps, coffee mugs, health products, info products, it doesn’t matter.
What they really want to know is the BLUEPRINT. Can you show them how to make money with your products? Do you have an MLM Business plan that you can share with them?
As a leader you need to provide the blueprint. People don’t care what they are selling. They just want to make money, all they care about is if its ethical and if it’s legal. Not only that but people want the end result of what the product will do, not the product itself so there is no need to get caught up in statistics or facts about what you sell.
What’s more is because there is less and less trust nowadays especially online, seeing proof and testimonials is very important when presenting your business. Not just testimonials from some of the top earners, but for example, from new people who joined and were able to make a commission in their first few weeks. Those kinds of testimonials REALLY get people’s attention, even if it’s not life changing results e.g. 5 signups in their first 2 weeks. Your prospects may not be looking to make a 6 figure income and could only be looking to make a few hundred dollars per month.
In summary, there is no need to chase people like I did when I first got started (and majority of they time they were the wrong people anyway). What you want to do instead is understand and apply the principles of Attraction Marketing to get more leads, reps and customers into your business without ever getting rejected again. As a thank you for reading this far, I will be sure to share with you below exactly how this works and how to take a step-by-step blueprint that the top earners use which can help with your recruiting efforts too.
